BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY (SUNDAY FEATURE) (2004) – Sunday July 25 at 8.30 PM
In early 19th Century Peru, an old Inca rope bridge collapses and five people plunge to their deaths. At the scene is Brother Juniper, just minutes away from receiving the same fate. The priest is determined to discover how each of the victims came to be there, and if there might be a divine reason behind the disastrous event. Based on novel by Thornton Wilder, starring Gabriel Byrne, F. Murray Abraham, Kathy Bates, Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel.


THE CLUB – Monday July 26 at 8.00 PM
Series premiere! Kiwi supercoach Graham Lowe left the Manly Sea Eagles some twenty years ago, after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage.  This year has seen his return to the fray, to finish what he started, this time as CEO. This dramatic new series goes behind the scenes as the club fights its way to the top of the rugby league ladder, in the hunt for the ultimate prize – a grand final win. Tonight: The Sea Eagles are riding high, but will they be able to keep up the momentum? Graham Lowe remembers the near death experience that sent him packing from Manly back in 1992; and a look inside the inner workings of the judiciary, when a reckless tackle sees Steve Matai facing a lengthy ban.

 

NATIVE AFFAIRS – Monday July 26 at 8.30 PM
Educational, informed and serious current affairs. Julian Wilcox and the team are back for 2010, with regional and national stories from a Maori perspective as well as international indigenous news.

 

MANLY NIGHT FOOTBALL – Monday July 26 at 9.30 PM
Monday night is Manly night on Maori Television! New Zealand’s second-favourite NRL team has a new free-to-air home in 2010.  Tonight: Sea Eagles v West Tigers.

 

THREADS OF HOPE (INTERNATIONAL DOCO) – Tuesday July 27 at 8.30 PM
Three Chilean women armed only with sewing needles and scraps of cloth reveal the truth behind Pinochet’s dictatorship. Narrated by Donald Sutherland.

 

EAST WEST 101 (DRAMA) – Tuesday July 27 at 9.30 PM
Muslim detective, Zane Malik, is fighting crime in a post 9/11 world, an Australian-Arab man fighting suspicion and fear to prove himself. His nemesis is another detective, Crowley, an old school operator more interested in getting a result than following the rules. Their battle of wills plays out in the series, a quest for dominance that also serves as a metaphor for the fear that exists between the eastern and western worlds. Tonight: Mr and Mrs Ngo have been killed. So who stands to inherit the family wealth? Or should Malik be more concerned with the discovery that Mr Ngo was once a witness of a gangland murder? 

 

BENEATH THE MAORI MOON – Thursday July 29 at 8.00 PM
In the centenary year of Maori rugby, a series on the subject based on the acclaimed book by Malcolm Mulholland. Tonight: A look at the all-time best Maori XV, featuring some of the great forwards such as Buck Shelford, Zinzan Brooke and Waka Nathan.

 

PHUNK NATION – Friday July 30 at 8.00 PM
A black bus, a bunch of boys from the hood and a one horse town … follow the adventures of world-class hip hop dance crew Prestige as they leave their South Auckland homes to explore rural New Zealand. Tonight: Thom has an axe to grind in Hokitika, older residents prove they’ve still got it as they bust out their hip hop moves and the Asian waterski contingent give a masterclass on the water.

 

HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI – Friday July 30 at 8.30 PM
A show with a style and flavour all its own, this live singing competition has grown a large and faithful following over the last three series, from the amazing talent that turns up to audition every week to the dedicated viewers that tune at home. Filmed in front of a studio audience at Maori Television’s Auckland base, performers travel with their supporters from all around the motu to be part of the fun, entertain the crowd – and have a crack at winning the hearts and text votes of the audience.  Matai Smith is on hosting duties, with side support coming this year from past HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI winners such as Pikiteora Mura-Hita, who made her names as a series winner in 2008.  Viewers’ votes will once again decide at the end of the night who will win the weekly prize of $1,000, plus the chance to compete in the grand final for $10,000.

MAARA KAI – Sunday July 25 at 6.30 PM
A practical guide to becoming less dependent on supermarkets by growing more produce at home. Tonight: A wrap up of the year, plus past presenters of Kiwi Maara and Maara Kai make an appearance.

 

KAITANGATA TWITCH – Sunday July 25 at 7.00 PM
Action, adventure, magic and CGI combine in this award-winning series about a 13 year old girl, her family, the place they live and the incredible events that will shake them all. Based on a novel by Margaret Mahy. Tonight: Her family could be set to leave the area for good and her mentor is struck down. Meredith realises she must act to save her world from collapsing. There is only one solution - give the island what it wants.

 

WILLIE JACKSON’S NEWSBITES – Friday July 30 at 10.00 PM
A potent mix of interviews, opinion and satire. The straight-talking broadcaster is back after last year’s successful pilot to take on the newsmakers and get to the heart of the issues that concern Maori and all New Zealanders. Plus Toi Iti’s popular and cutting edge ‘Half-Caste Broadcast’ takes a light-hearted satirical squint at life in Aotearoa. Turn on, tune in and smarten up!

 

HIP HOP CENTRAL – Saturday July 31 at 10.30 PM
Presenters Pieter T and Skye Stirling wrap up the series that traced the evolution of hip hop from its arrival in Aotearoa in the mid-1980s through to today. How have Maori rangatahi embraced hip hop? What does the New Zealand variant look, feel and sound like? Featuring dance crews, graff artists, DJs, beat boxers and freestylers from around the country.
