Saturday, 15 September 2007 - Lifestyle & Entertainment

A teenager from Gisborne last night became the first ever winner of HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI, Māori Television’s live singing superstar competition.

Thousands of text votes were cast to determine the $10,000 winner out of 19 superb finalists.

Jasmine Taare beat Robert Ruha and Edward Te Moana to the top spot on Māori Television’s most regularly watched television show after the singer captured the hearts of viewers with her bubbly personality and big voice.

The three finalists embraced after host Te Hamua Nikora announced the winner of the first season of the contest, with Jasmine,  having difficulty catching her breath.

“I just can’t believe it!” said the emotional singer, who received $10,000 cash.

Jasmine, started singing as a toddler and auditioned for HOMAI TE PAKIPAKI in episode 14.

Heading into the competition’s final week, many thought the show’s top title was up for grabs, with hosts Te Hamua Nikora and Miss Black, saying viewers would have to decide between the older crooners and the younger artists.

Hundreds of  people auditioned for this year’s show, which puts contestants through auditions and performances that showcase musical genres ranging from country to hard rock.
